from 8 reviewsIf you’re interested in law-enforcement, but you’re on the fence on whether you want to apply or not, or what the process is like, then this is your book. The book does a great job of breaking down expectations of the entire hiring process, police academy, phase training and even success after pause training. As someone who’s been in law-enforcement for over 11 years, I think the book and the author offer valuable tips help you succeed throughout your career. If I were in the beginning stages of getting hired or a new officer, I definitely recommend this book.

As a current LEO this book is an easy read and I would recommend this to aspiring LEO and current. It's not a book of war stories or overly motivational speeches but more of a guide / checklist.

What sets this book apart is its honest depiction of life as a rookie officer. The real-life stories are both entertaining and eye-opening, providing a glimpse into the challenges and rewards of the job. Each chapter is packed with useful tips, not just for newcomers but also as helpful reminders for seasoned professionals.

Although I am not a rookie anymore, this book was an amazing read. I enjoyed how it walks you through the process of getting hired and what to expect throughout the academy and the phase training process. I enjoyed how the author talked about his personal experiences and how to navigate through the job. I'll be buying this for my squad as well to read.

“The Rookie Handbook” is an accurate depiction of preparation needed in today’s policing. E.J Cooper shares his insight and hands-on experience relating to success in the field. He covers a variety of topics, some that often are over looked. As an officer from a department of over 2,000 sworn members I believe this book is a valuable addition to the library and would prove any service member well in their journey. I plan on sharing this easy read with my squad members and future trainees.

For someone who isn’t pursuing a career in law enforcement but is deeply interested in understanding the experiences of Black individuals within the system, “The Rookie Handbook” provided a unique and eye-opening perspective. The author’s candid and authentic account of navigating the world of law enforcement as a Black officer offers readers like me—who are curious yet cautious—a rare glimpse into the realities of this challenging profession. What stood out to me the most was the honesty with which the author shared his journey, not just the technical aspects of the job but the personal and cultural challenges that come with it. It was fascinating to see how he balanced the demands of the profession with his identity, offering insights that resonate beyond the field of law enforcement. This book isn’t just a guide for aspiring officers; it’s a thoughtful exploration of what it means to serve and protect in a world that often sees you as the “other.” The author’s narrative is both encouraging and sobering, shedding light on the complexities of the job while also highlighting the broader implications for communities of color. For anyone curious about the intersection of race and law enforcement, or simply seeking to understand the world from a different perspective, “The Rookie Handbook” is a must-read. It’s more than a roadmap to a career—it’s a conversation starter, a reflection, and an invitation to see things from the inside out.

A must read very insightful for those that are not in law enforcement. Love this book highly recommend reading.

If you're seriously thinking about starting a career in law enforcement or maybe even have a year on you should read this book. It's important to take in competent and experienced viewpoints from as many sources as possibly when working in law enforcement and this is a great book to start.
